United States Elections under Expert Scrutiny
On Friday 19 September at 5.30pm, in the State Library Lecture Theatre, Professor Don DeBats will present the next in Flinders University Library’s popular ‘Fridays at the Library’ series. His subject is ‘Beyond the Spin: Making Sense of the 2008 US Elections’.
Don DeBats is Professor of American Studies and Professor of Politics and International Studies at Flinders, and has been specialising in United States history and politics for more than thirty years. His main research interest is United States politics, past and present.
His publications cover a wide range of topics, including university reform, US and Canadian political history, and the Australian–US free trade agreement.
Four years ago Professor DeBats spoke at the University Library and made a remarkably accurate prediction of the results of the 2004 elections. With the poll due to take place on Tuesday 4 November, this will be a timely opportunity to hear an expert assessment of this world-shaping event.
The public is welcome to attend this free event in the State Library Lecture Theatre, corner Kintore Avenue and North Terrace. Light refreshments will be served.
For enquiries please contact Gillian Dooley, Special Collections Librarian, on 8201 5238.

US election: public event in Adelaide
For interested Adders readers, the Flinders University Library and Australian Book Review are hosting a free, no-bookings-necessary event in the city on Friday afternoon. Here's the media release:
Despite sanguine comments on American dedication to the separation of church and state, I plan to be lobbying my resident American fairly heavily in the next month or so (as heavily as he no doubt plans to be ignoring me). Wish I could go to this event but distance and the weather prevent me. I agree with nearly every Australian that Sarah Palin is beyond the palin, but the huntin' bit is not the scary bit, and certainly won't be for many of her countrypersons, who are willing to shoot what they eat, as opposed to just eat it and pretend it didn't use to be alive. Its the rest of her that is scary. Now hailing horizontally here - any precipitation welcome, but this seems a bit extreme...

Heh. I too do not mind the huntin', and have indeed shot the odd tin can myself in my day. No, it is mainly the stuff about the wimminz and their rights that has me concerned, plus plundering for oil, almost never having been out of the country, etc. That and the fact that she really does not appear to be all that bright or well-informed, except of course that even W has been in charge for eight years and the planet is still here (though possibly not for long). I look forward to Don's take on it all. This being Adders, I used to sing in the choir with his wife.
ReplyDeleteRe horizontal hail, I remember waiting at tram stops in Melb where it seemed to be actually raining straight upwards from the ground. Only when I was wearing a skirt, though. xx
