Destroying our way of life

The [carbon] tax, after all, was not on people, but on 500 high-polluting companies. The compensation was to guard against costs those companies might pass on to their customers.

So, no big deal, I said to myself when the details were announced. Surely this’ll all blow over. And then, found myself more than a little surprised when a Herald-Sun commenter (one step above YouTube on the food-chain, I’ll admit) said “Somebody needs to assassinate Julia Gillard NOW before she totally destroys our way of life.”

Gee, and there was I thinking one of the cornerstones of our way of life was the luxury of living in a country where heads of state don't get assassinated.

Quotation is from the brilliant rant here at Heathen Scripture.

  1. I feel ill about the way this is being handled by the gutter press. Ill and ashamed of the narrow, selfish and dreadful behaviour I am witnessing on the evening news, too. Not good for the blood pressure.

  2. Thanks Kerryn, for a dose of reality and just being here. The country needs you!

  3. Thanks for reminding me that there are voices of sanity left. Sigh. They are just mostly quieter than the other voices.

  4. I find the feeling against her to be quite puzzling, e.g., the "She's a liar", rather than "She told a lie."
It's more than a dislike of policies - almost a spiteful dislike of her.
Or is this just the way that those who coined the term "Howard haters" think?

  5. I agree with Frances, it's a big problem the shabby deal that the PM has copped from tabloid politics and media.
That's how politics is done, tabloid style these days, ask former Brit PM Brown, also poor old Bob Brown here.
As to the carbon tax, I feel like I'm back in that medieval village again.
    Did someone say "backward"?

  6. Hmm. I thought I'd google the quote to get a screencap, if possible. The quote doesn't pull up any Hun pages in Google, so I thought i'd go to Geoff Lemon's post to see if he'd linked it. The account is now suspended (as at time of looking, about 6 am - might be just transient?).
It would appear the comment has been well and truly scrubbed and now can't be verified.
Am I just being overly suspicious? Time to put the colander on my head?
Has anyone else got a screencap?

  9. My god, $9.90 per household! That's a couple of cups of coffee that hubby won't be having and I might have to forgo a chocolate bar. How will we survive such hardship? Probably with improved health outcomes actually...

  10. Thanks Anonymous, and I'm very happy that in the unleashed version Lemon makes the good decision not to use "retard" as a slur. But the value of the whole is let down a bit because there is no screencap. News Ltd will just deny it.
