Abandoning the good ship Apostrophe #2 (an occasional series)

Today's crikey.com.au email bulletin has just arrived and in the subject line they were leading with the headline Swans' Budget Outlook.

Wow, I thought, that Sydney AFL team must have done something really radical with their money for it to make it to the top of the crikey news, and off-season, too.

But no. It's about the Federal Treasurer. Whose name is not Wayne Swans.

Yay for you. I thought the same thing too. Must send it to Best Beloved, who like nothing better than to laugh at odd apostrophe use. One of his favorite pasttimes is to tease the Apostrophe Protection Society with notions of possessive mothers in law (I'm not even going to go there).

Have you seen this new blog? She's keeping a list so the rest of us don't have to.

Oh, bliss! Have added it to the feedreader. Thanks!

I was just reading The New York Review of Books and came across this misuse of the apostrophe -

'the series's creators'.

It was in reference to The Wire, so perhaps it was ironic.

Still, if you can't trust the NYRB, who can you trust?

Rung, rang, rung, rang, past participle, rung, rang, rung, rang. Nearly got punched aka Pudding thief upon the nose for suggesting to young thing "if you can't use it, then perhaps best lose it"

Had moment of confusion courtesy of ABC earlier today re:

Cricket tops testes ranking

the photo of the chap is even more worrying than the headline

Did anyone else get upset when last Monday the ABC told us that "It's possible the Greens could take four inner city seats off of Labor" ?
