Who's sorry now?

Tim Dunlop has a sharply pointed post this morning on the subject of Tony Abbott's sudden discovery that he's actually quite sorry the Howard Government was a bit nasty to Independent Andrew Wilkie (you know, the one almost certain to win the seat of Denison) back in the day, calling him 'unbalanced' and everything.

The fact that Abbott apparently can't see how this looks tells you everything you need to know about his judgement. A nice hot cup of STFU would have been a great deal more to the point. And the waspish comment of the spokesperson suggests that news of this particular apology was never supposed to get out, which indicates that Abbott and his bad judgement are living in Fantasyland as well.

It's OK - there are lots of journos already living there who will keep him company.

Am hugely amused though at the notion that Abbott thinks Wilkie gives a tinker's cuss about the Coalition's past efforts at slander. The bloke is military intelligence trained. Their meeting next Monday would make wonderful reality TV. He told the 3 country independents how much he loved, loved the bush - what will be say to Wilkie? Enjoying the war?

I haven't seen any footage of Katter, Windsor and Oakeshott's reactions to that unbelievably pathetic 'I just lerve the bush' line, but I imagine Katter theatrically rolling his eyes, Windsor twitching up one corner of his mouth and Oakeshott kindly averting his gaze.

Sorry to wander off-topic, but I don't know about you, but I am endlessly delighted at dry, pragmatic rural no-nonsense drollness meeting Big Media + Big Politics blither. Doesn't mean I agree with them, just enjoying the spectacle. Tony Windsor has the long paddock stare down pat. Heh.

Bernice, I spent the first twelve years of my life living in a farmhouse three miles out of a town called Curramulka (pop. 128), surrounded by sheep, wheat, barley and sardonic farmers, on land my family had been farming since 1855. Those dudes are a familiar species to me. Well, maybe not Katter so much, but definitely Windsor, and Oakeshott looks like one the boys I went to primary school with.

So many oddball fiction and movie plots being presented to us in this interregnum: so many possibilities for stupid comments, so many really amusing moments, we may be actually living The Life of Brian. I'm nominating Bob Katter for a starring role.
The latest outburst from Abbott that he can't give his costings to Treasury as requested by the Independents is inherently contradictory. If he can't trust Treasury or Dept. of Finance because he says "a criminal leak" happened when they found some of his costings to be hundreds of millions of dollars out, how on earth is he going to operate in Government. Is he going to use Barnaby Joyce and his old accounting firm to operate as a defacto Treasury Department?
In the immortal words of Graham Kennedy so many years ago - "It's a joke Joyce".

'I love the bush', sounded a lot like the line 'some of my friends are black people', to me. Yep, that would be right Tony.
